Preston North End Record Transfers
Preston North End are one of few Championship clubs to spend very little during transfer windows, and only seven of their players have cost them over £1m. Their record transfer arrival fee still stands at £2.07m all the way back from 2006-07 as a young Neil Mellor left European champions Liverpool. This was definitely one of Prestons best bits of business as the 23-year-old centre-forward went on to play 130 games for the Lilywhites, scoring 38 goals before being forced to retire at the end of 2012 due to a career-ending injury.
Since Mellor, only one player has come close to breaking his record transfer fee – Tom Bayliss. Bayliss joined in the summer of the current 2019-20 season from League One side Coventry for £1.98m, and the 20-year-old central midfielder was the biggest club transfer since David Healy who joined from Manchester United at the start of the new millennium for £1.80m. The majority of Preston North End’s top signings came from the early 2000s when they first played in the newly reformed Football League Championship.
As for departures, Preston have made more of a name for themselves selling players for larger sums of money. Up until 2017-18, David Nugent’s record transfer sale fee stood at just over £8m as he joined Portsmouth back in 2007-08. 10 years later, English centre-forward Jordan Hugill notably made his club-record move to Premier League side West Ham United for £9.18m. Two seasons later, fellow Premier League side Sheffield United snapped up left-winger Callum Robinson from the Lilywhites for around £7m, making him the clubs third highest sale in history. Once again just like arrivals, the Lilywhites sales are nothing to write home about with the exception of the top few mentioned.
Preston legend, Jon Macken made his move to Manchester City ahead of the 2001-02 campaign after scoring a notable 63 goals in 189 games for the Lilywhites. Macken was sold for big money back then, and left for £6.75m which still makes him Preston’s fourth-highest record sale.
Famous Preston North End Transfers
Preston famously signed football icon Bill Shankly from Carlisle United in 1933, and it was here that the Scottish defender learnt the most about football and gained incredible knowledge for his prestigious managerial career which followed.
The original fee was thought to have been £500, and Shankly went on to play almost 300 times for the Lilywhites and he was part of their 1938 FA Cup-winning team, before retiring in 1949.
Shankly went on to manage Liverpool where he led them to three First Division titles and a European Cup, to add to two more FA Cups.
