Rotherham United Record Transfers
Rotherham’s biggest deals might not be as historic as is the case with some other clubs out there but the Millers were quite busy in the market in recent years. In 2016/17, for example, they managed to break their own record when they penned a contract with Jon Taylor from Peterborough for a reported sum of £540,000, which is still their most expensive incoming transfer to this day.
Taylor’s arrival meant that the former top-dog on the books, Danny Ward, who arrived from Huddersfield Town back in 2014/15 for £432,000, would move down to second place. But he also wouldn’t stay there for too long as they weren’t really done with big purchases at that point just yet. In 2019/20, they came quite close to breaking the record once again when they brought in Freddie Ladapo from Plymouth Argyle for a reported price tag of £504,000.
When it comes to their biggest departures, there have been quite a few lucrative ones and what’s even more important, some of those are still fairly recent too. Rotherham parted ways with Will Vaulks who moved to Cardiff City in 2019/20 for a club-record fee of £2.1m, surpassing Danny Ward in the process as well since he was sold to the same club a couple of years before that but for a slightly lower price of £1.6m.
Semi Ajayi also decided to depart in 2019/20 and the defender moved to West Bromwich Albion for £1.4m to round off the top three exits from the club to date. We should also mention that they made quite a profit with the majority of those departures since the players were initially bought for much smaller fees and were in turn sold for big money soon afterwards.
Famous Rotherham United Transfers
In retrospect, there are surely more than just a few transfers that stand out from the crowd. First and foremost, we simply have to give a shout to the record-breakers and record-holders at the club and all three of Taylor, Vaulks and Ward make the list for that reason.
But even more importantly, and regardless of the price tags, some of the deals over the years were extremely impactful and ended up etching their names in the history books. We have to mention players such as Lee Camp, a superb goalie ever since his arrival at the club in 2015 and all the way to 2017, or the arrival of the iconic Adam le Fondre who rattled the inside of the net for fun.
And we shouldn’t forget the free arrival of Michael Smith that represents the definition of a bargain of the decade, quite literally. It goes without saying that the list could go on even further, which is a clear testament to the sheer size of the club as a whole.
