Wigan Athletic Record Transfers
By no means are Wigan Athletic big spenders in the transfer market, and during their most recent spell in the Premier League from 2005-2013 came the majority of their record signings. Upon arrival to the Premier League, the Latics signed Senegalese international Henri Camara from former Championship side Wolves. Carama arrived for a club-record fee of £5.81m which was over three times their previous £1.89m record fee for Jason Roberts the season before.
Soon after Camara arrived at Wigan, a new strike partner arrived from Birmingham City. Emile Heskey joined the Latics for a new record fee of £6.75m, and the former Leicester and Liverpool powerhouse arrived during his prime, where he soon reclaimed his England international status.
To this day, Emile Heske’s record arrival still stands, and he is slightly ahead of attacking midfielder Jason Koumas who arrived the season after Heskey for £6.21m.
French international winger Charles N’Zogbia notably joined the Latics from Newcastle United in 2008-09, and his £5.75m fee still stands as the clubs fourth-highest transfer in history, ahead of Ivan Ramis who was brought in from RCD Mallorca in 2012-13. After brief spells in League One, Wigan’s transfer budgets have been heavily damaged and they have had to pick up players for much lower fees than they were used too.
Their most recent transfer arrival was Kieffer Moore who joined from Barnsley ahead of the current 2019-20 season, for almost £2.5m making him the 27th highest signing for the club.
On the other hand, Wigan have been more known to sell many high profile talents to Premier League clubs, especially since their relegation from the top flight in 2013.
To this day, right-back Antonio Valencia’s fee £16.92m fee still remains as the Latics record sale of all time. The Ecuadorian international went on to play over 240 games for the Red Devils, winning nine major honours. James McCarthy famously left Wigan to join Everton in 2013-14 for almost £14m, and this high fee topped Wilson Palacios’ £13.50m move to Spurs in 2008, and Victor Moses’ £10.35m sale to Chelsea in 2012.

Former England international left-back, and Premier League veteran Leighton Baines, started out his career in Wigan Athletics youth academy before breaking into the first team in 2002. Baines was part of the Latics Premier League promotion-winning side, racking up 145 games for the club before famously making his £6.75m move to Premier League rivals Everton where he has gone on to play 345 games for the Toffees.
