Cheltenham Town Record Transfers
Even though Cheltenham Town’s 2019/20 campaign has been a success, the Robins are not exactly a club with a rich history of big-money signings. This will become much clearer once we highlight some of their top transfers over the years.
Jermaine McGlashan, a midfielder who was brought in from Aldershot Town back in the 2011/12 campaign, still holds the club-record fee of £68,000. And yes, admittedly, the figure may not be as impressive by today’s standards but it still represented a huge investment by the upper hierarchy.
Even more so because McGlashan dethroned Brian Wilson who was the previous record-holder around, ever since his arrival from Stoke City in 2004/05. Interestingly, he was also bought for the same price tag the club had to pay for the former Aldershot Town man.
The third most expensive acquisition on this list is Grant McCann who arrived in 2002/03 from West Ham United, once again for £68,000 – the very same sum. It goes without saying that these are not really historic transfer fees but they are pretty significant in the context of the club as a whole.
When it comes to exits, however, we’ll start to see some bigger figures on their books. In 2018/19, Mo Eisa went to Bristol City for an incredible price tag of £990,000, and that remains the Robins’ biggest ever deal, considering both incoming and outgoing transfers at the club.
But let’s not forget that Steven Gillespie was also sold to Colchester United in 2008/09 for £383,000 while Kayode Odejayi left for Barnsley FC back in the 2007/08 season for £270,000, rounding off the top departures at the club.
Famous Cheltenham Town Transfers
Since the majority of their deals were actually free agents arriving at the club, all three of McGlashan, Wilson and McCann deserve a place on this list for being the Robins’ record-holders at the moment, which is quite an incredible thing, to be honest.
Along the same lines, Eisa and his departure will also be mentioned because Cheltenham Town made an incredible profit with his sale in 2018/19. Also, the arrival of Ryan Broom in 2018 was a great deal for the team and he has since then turned into a steady presence within their squad.
Of course, there are more names that should arguably be included and even though none of them were really expensive or extremely famous, for that matter, some still delivered and paid back the trust that was put into them by the club.
