Fleetwood Town Record Transfers
The Fishermen have only paid a transfer fee on eight players in history, and the majority of these signings came during their historic rise from non-league football to Football League One.
In 2012, Fleetwood were promoted up to League Two for the first time, and just two seasons later followed promotion up to League One. The Cod Army’s first major signing was George Donnelly who arrived from League One side Plymouth in 2010 for just over £100k, making him the clubs record signing, and the first time they had ever purchased a player for a paid fee.
This record was broken by over double in 2012 as Jamille Matt joined Kidderminster at the start of Fleetwood’s Football League journey. Matt came in for over £200k and played 56 times for the Fishermen before making his move to Blackpool in 2016.
Five seasons later, however, central midfielder Kyle Dempsey was brought in from Premier League side Huddersfield Town for a massive £410k fee, which now makes him the clubs all-time record signing by a stretch.
Dempsey is still a Fleetwood Town player having made 80 appearances for the Fishermen, though he is currently on loan to League One rivals Peterborough United where he will remain until the end of the 2019-20 season.
Ryan Cresswell and Paddy Madden notably joined Fleetwood Town for around £150k each, first Cresswell arrived in 2013-14 and Madden in 2017-18. Only three footballers have been sold for a transfer fee by Fleetwood in the past decade, and the first was George Donnelly who left just one season after joining for a decreased £68k fee. Amari’i Bell was later sold in 2017-18 to Blackburn for an increased fee of £270k.
Famous Fleetwood Town Transfers
If we are talking transfers, there is really only one name we hear about from Fleetwood Town, and he goes by the name of Jamie Vardy. Vardy began his professional football career at a very old age, and he came through the ranks like no other.
The 24-year-old centre-forward joined the Fishermen in 2011 from Halifax Town, for just £150k after scoring 26 goals in one season. Vardy played for Fleetwood for just one season, scoring an incredible 31 goals in just 36 games to make him the Conference’s top scorer and player of the season as his side were promoted as champions in 2012. His heroic campaign put him in the spotlight of many top clubs including Premier League side Leicester City.
Vardy joined Leicester for just £1.12m which makes him the clubs record sale, and the rest, as they say, is history. The striker went on to win the Premier League title with Leicester and make 26 appearances for England as Fleetwood are most definitely still kicking themselves for selling the world-class striker.
