Brighton: Seagulls ‘considering another’ Mykola Matviyenko bid

Brighton: Seagulls 'considering another' Mykola Matviyenko bid - Brighton News

Brighton are ‘considering another’ bid to sign Shakhtar Donetsk star Mykola Matviyenko, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Seagulls flying…

The Seagulls have been flying under manager Roberto De Zerbi since the departure of former fan favourite boss Graham Potter to Chelsea.

Brighton are just five points off a Europa League-qualifying place, winning an impressive 11 out of 21 matches this season and three in their last five – including a 3-0 win over Liverpool.

De Zerbi’s men are thought to eyeing new signings this January window as well with Matviyenko a serious target.

The Latest: Brighton weighing improved Matviyenko offer…

According to Sky journalist Lyall Thomas, after having a bid rejected, the south coast side are weighing an improved bid for the Ukraine international.

He explained:

“#Shakhtar Donetsk have rejected #Brighton’s latest offer for centre-back Mykola Matviyenko. #bhafc considering another bid. Important target for head coach Roberto De Zerbi.”

The Verdict: Get it done…

For all of Brighton’s strengths, De Zerbi’s team have conceded eight goals in their last five games and it’s clear they could do with some defensive reinforcements to shore up a fairly leaky backline.

Matviyenko could be the ideal candidate for Brighton given he has been a fixture of this Shakhtar side which has dominated Ukrainian football.

The three-time league winner, still just 26-years-old, has already amassed over 50 international caps for his country and 42 appearances across both the Europa League and Champions League for Shakhtar.

Matviyenko has the experience of a player far beyond his years and it speaks volumes that he is an ‘important’ target for De Zerbi.
