Lincoln City Record Transfers
The Imps are not big spenders by any means, and they have only paid a transfer fee for nine players in their history. The first-ever paid arrival for Lincoln was all the way back in 1979-80 when George Shipley joined from Southampton for £46k.
It was not until almost ten years later that this record was broken by Gordon Hobson who arrived from Southampton once again, but this time for an increased £64k. This record stood for some time, and in 2003-04, Francis Green’s £90k arrival from Peterborough topped the list.
Just three seasons later, however, this record was blown out the water by young French centre-forward Dany N’Guessan who joined from Scottish Premiership side Rangers for a new massive record fee of almost £350k, making him the club’s record signing in history to this day. N’Guessan signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with Lincoln City in January 2007, and he made nine appearances for the Imps in the second half of the season despite his first goal coming in August of the following season.
In January of 2009, the Frenchman was named League Two Player of the Month after scoring four goals, and subsequently was named in the League Two PFA Team of the Year for the 2008-09 season before signing for Nigel Pearson’s Leicester City in 2009 for an undisclosed fee.
In 2010-11, Lincoln came close to breaking N’Guessan’ record on two occasions during the 2010-11 summer transfer window when duo Gavin McCallum and Mustapha Carayol arrived for around £200k each. The most recent arrival who Lincoln paid a fee for was centre-forward John Akinde who came in from Barnet in 2018-19 for just £100k, making him the clubs fourth highest arrival in history.
As well as arrivals, Lincoln’s departures have been nothing to write home about, and their record sale still stands at £675k having been set in 1997-98. Gareth Ainswoth famously joined Port Vale at the age of 24 having scored an impressive 37 goals in just 83 for the Imps. Gavin Gordon was the closest footballer to break Ainsworth’s record sale fee as he moved to Cardiff at the start of the millennium for £360Th, matching Darren Huckerby’s fee set in 1995-96.
