Sunderland: Transfer target Jay Spearing moves to Tranmere Rovers - Blackpool News

Sunderland target Jay Spearing has signed a contract with Tranmere Rovers, with his move confirmed via the Merseyside club’s official website.

With Black Cats manager Phil Parkinson seemingly keen to bolster his squad options this summer, a transfer link to Spearing had emerged via The Sun (5 July, page 61).

The former Liverpool youngster left Blackpool at the end of the 2019/20 season with much experience, having previously had spells with Leicester City, Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers and the Tangerines (as per Transfermarkt).

Spearing, who is valued at £540,000 by Transfermarkt, has now opted to join Tranmere and drop down to League Two.

The Wallasey-born midfielder is confirmed to have signed a two-year deal at Prenton Park, a move that brings him closer to home.

“I have family who are massive Tranmere Rovers fans, they were delighted when they found out the news,” Spearing told the club’s website.

“My nephew was sending me all sorts of Tranmere Rovers songs and he has been texting me all day asking when will the news be announced.”

Last season, the 31-year-old made a total of 30 appearances for Blackpool, contributing with two goals and one assist (as per Transfermarkt).

It is unclear just how keen Sunderland were to bring in Spearing but the fact that he has dropped down a division to League Two shows that he may not have been overly keen on a move to the Black Cats, or possibly vice versa.

Whatever the case may be, it now leaves Parkinson needing to look elsewhere for options to bolster his midfield ahead of thew new season.
