Sunderland: Transfer target Matija Sarkic joins Shrewsbury Town on loan - League One News

Sunderland transfer target Matija Sarkic has joined Shrewsbury Town on loan from Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Black Cats manager Phil Parkinson saw last season’s first-choice goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin leave the club at the end of June, moving to Scottish Premiership side Rangers. He has chosen to replace the Scottish ‘keeper with Remi Matthews, who arrived from Bolton Wanderers earlier this summer.

Sarkic, who left Aston Villa this summer after his contract expired, had been linked with a move to the Stadium of Light in recent weeks.

He has signed a deal with Wolves after his exit from Villa Park, with the Molineux club opting to allow him to spend the new season on loan to gain first team experience. By joining Shrewsbury Town, Sarkic is expected to provide competition alongside the likes of Harry Burgoyne and Cameron Gregory.

Upon the announcement of the youngster’s arrival at the Montgomery Waters Stadium, Shrewsbury manager Ricketts spoke to the club’s official website, saying:

“He’s a very good, young keeper who did really well last year at Livingston. We’re delighted to have him here at the club. He’s a really good prospect, Brian Jensen and myself are really looking forward to working with him and he’s a great addition to the team.”

With Sarkic moving to League One side Shrewsbury, it will now be interesting to see how he gets on in England’s third tier, where he will come up against the Black Cats over the coming months and have the chance to show Parkinson what could have been.

Sunderland will be watching on with interest as they hand Matthews a chance in between the sticks at the Stadium of Light.
