Coventry: Zain Westbrooke reveals reason behind Bristol Rovers move - Bristol Rovers News

Former Coventry City player Zain Westbrooke has discussed his return to League One, where he has joined Bristol Rovers.

The 23-year-old midfielder played a part in the Sky Blues’ promotion from League One last season, featuring for Mark Robins’ side on 25 occasions in which he netted four goals and gained two assists.

Seemingly deemed surplus to requirements at Coventry, Westbrooke completed a move to Bristol Rovers, duly dropping back down to England’s third tier.

Coventry announced the deal, which came with an undisclosed transfer fee, via their official website,  whilst the midfielder spoke about what tempted him to join Rovers.

Speaking to his new club’s website, Westbrooke said: “I’m really happy to get the deal over the line.

“I’ve been speaking to Ben [Garner, Rovers’ manager] for a few weeks now and he sold me on the project.

“The direction the club is moving in matches exactly what I’m wanting to do with my career.

“I enjoyed a really good season last year with Coventry and played a big part in their promotion and I’m looking to achieve that again here.”

Bristol Rovers finished 14th in the League One standings last term, ending up 15 points short of a play-off place.

It seems a strange decision to drop back down a league, especially shortly after winning promotion with Coventry, but maybe that challenge is what excites Westbrooke.

Although Mark Robins has already done plenty of transfer business during the off-season, the Sky Blues manager may now need to find a replacement for the midfielder after his move to Bristol Rovers.
